About Us

Who are we? We're the students of the Museum Management and Curatorship program at Fleming College, or MMCs for short.

The MMC program is an intense, fast paced immersion experience that trains its students for careers in the museum, gallery or cultural heritage world. This program has a lot to offer those who have an appreciation for history, culture, artifacts, art or museums in general.
And that's how we all found ourselves here.

Our class has been working hard and learning the ins and outs of the museum world, and having a great time while doing it. We've got to have new experiences and do work we've never done before, both in the classroom and out.

Class Time

We've had some interesting classes in the MMC program, we don't have the typical lecture and test type classes that other programs have. Our classes are more hands-on, working with the Peterborough Museum and Archives (PMA) and other museum professionals to learn about what it takes to work at and run a museum or gallery.
Take a look at some of experiences during class time!

Working hard or hardly working?

Got to get these uniforms looking ship shape!

There are some genuinely cool artifacts in the PMA's collection

Steady...

I did it! Cutting my first plexiglass in class at Flemming College

Why does Liam look so concerned? Mackenzie did a good job!

I genuinely love getting to work with different artifacts. It's fascinating learning about them and their history.
Textiles are my favourite. From an old jacket to a petticoat, from a top hat to an old dress, I love learning how to care and handle different objects.

We got to visit the Robert McLaughlin Art Gallery in Oshawa with our professor Sonya Jones. She showed us the ins and outs of being a curator, how to create an exhibit and showed us some behind the scenes stuff. So much to learn and so much fun!

Sometimes the job can be really stressful...

...but we persevere!

On Location

Sometimes class work means taking things outside of the classroom and visiting local heritage sites, other museums and galleries and getting our hands dirty. Having experiences outside of class is a good way to get us prepared for real work in the field. Not to mention it's a lot of fun getting to go on these trips and learning about the places we go.
Here are a few times we ventured outside the classroom, and were working on location.

Ready to make this place look spooky!

And be sure to get those hard to reach places

After cleaning up and getting Lang all spooky, we got to enjoy volunteering at their All Hallows Eve event!

Some of our experiences came from volunteer work we did after class. One of my favourites was helping with the Peterborough Art Gallery's 'Its All About Art' fundraising auction. This event was celebrating 50 years the gallery had been involved in the art community of Peterborough. For this event, they were auctioning off beautiful paintings and sculptures to raise money for their gallery programming. We, as volunteers, got to show off the art to guests, and it was so much fun! Everyone was kind and so much fun to work with. I loved learning how to properly handle the art and see how a real auction worked.

Cheers to a job well done!

Nora and I made a good team!

Yes, that really is his hair...

Mini Exhibits

Our final project was to put together a 'mini exhibit' using an object we chose from home. Throughout the semester we had been working on these exhibits, from research, to mounting, creating our panels and coming up with an interactive activity, we did it all! I think everyone's exhibit turned out great. Some of the stories that were used to discuss these objects you wouldn't think just by first glance at the objects. But that's what happens when you spend enough time with something and really study it, you find out it's got a much deeper history than you thought.

My little Kokeshi doll, Aki

I did my mini exhibit on my Kokeshi doll that I had brought back from Japan. I loved researching about her and learning about the history she has.

We were all really proud of the work we did for our mini exhibits. It was so cool putting them together and seeing the final result. I loved working with my classmates, they are some of the most genuine, hard working and kind group of people I've ever met. We all help each other out when the work load gets too stressful, and share in each other's achievements.

I'm so grateful that I got the cool class this year!
